Hello Muirlands Community,
This week's temperatures are projected to keep climbing. I want to ensure everyone knows our campus has filtered water stations. Your child is encouraged to come to school with a refillable water bottle to help stay hydrated.
Please help us by ensuring your child arrives at school following our site dress policy. Your understanding and support in this matter are greatly appreciated. Please refer to the Muirlands dress code: 24-25 Muirlands Handbook - Dress Code
I remind you that our picture day is this Friday. The photo company utilizes a green screen and advises families not to send their students to school dressed in green.
Finally, our hearts are heavy following the tragedy that took place at the high school in Georgia earlier today. Muirlands will continue to practice our emergency drills and how we can best respond and prepare for emergencies. We want to reassure you that the safety of our campus is our top responsibility and priority, and we have robust safety measures in place.
Sincerely,
Jeff Luna, Principal

Hello Muirlands Community,
This is a quick reminder for our Back to School Night this Thursday. The evening's activities will commence with a brief message in the Auditorium at 5:15 p.m., followed by classroom visits starting at 5:35 p.m. Your presence and participation are highly valued. Here is a link to our Muirlands Back to School Night letter dated August 22, 2024.
Muirlands Middle School Staff utilizes a district program called Blocksi. This program not only allows teachers to view and manipulate the students' computer screens but also has a crucial parent component. Your involvement in this program is vital. Here is the Blocksi Parent Job Aid, which provides instructions for using the parent dashboard and for registration.
Students are required to use district-issued computers on campus. Our students can change their Google Classroom profile picture from the default setting (first letter of their name). However, I ask that any change to the profile picture be limited to their picture. No other images will be permitted. I appreciate your support with this.
Middle School Athletics Fall Tryouts will begin tomorrow Tuesday. They will be held in the PE Area and will start at 3:20 p.m. and end at 4:50 p.m. Per district procedures, these tryouts will be closed to observers.
SGT/SSC Parent Nominations
The Site Governance Team (SGT) aims to empower the staff, parents, and students to make long-range decisions and changes that will promote student academic, social, and physical growth. This is accomplished through shared decision-making. Shared decision-making allows for flexibility and assures accountability. It fosters positive communication, collaboration, and positive consensus. The goal of shared decision-making is to improve the quality of the learning experience and the learning outcomes of students, to improve the quality of education, to enhance the working conditions of employees, and to improve communications and involvement of the parents and community.
The School Site Council (SSC) is comprised of equal numbers of staff and parent representatives who serve a two-year term. The council meets eight times a year to oversee the implementation of various programs in the school, including state and federally-funded programs. The School Site Council is a governing body responsible for deciding how to spend categorical money to improve the instructional program here at Muirlands.
Each school in the district receives a different amount of money based on enrollment. The School Site Council members work together to set goals for improving student achievement at the school and allocating the funds to accomplish those goals.
We currently have a vacancy for two parents on the SSC and two parents on the SGT. Please contact Ms. Duncan @ [email protected] if you have questions regarding these two committees. SGT/SSC Parent Nominations 2024 - 2025

Hello Muirlands Community,
Day two was another great day. I want you to know how wonderful your students have been these first two days—they are a true joy to have on our campus.
We will have our first grade level assemblies tomorrow. During these assemblies, we will review many of the school's programs, extracurricular opportunities, and policies.
As a friendly reminder, we will be implementing a modified bell schedule every Wednesday this school year. Our school day will begin at 8:35 am and dismiss at 1:10 pm. Please use the following document Bell Schedule 2024-25 with Minimum Days to calendar our modified Wednesdays and select Fridays. These modified Wednesdays are designed to allow our staff time to collaborate on improving instruction and campus climate, improving learning conditions, and enhancing student-teacher interaction. In addition, the Muirlands staff is committed and available to meet with students in their classrooms from 1:15 - 1:45 pm every Wednesday. These office hours are an excellent time for students to get additional teacher support.
With appreciation,
Jeff Luna, Principal

Hello Muirlands Community,
Thank you for your support and for entrusting the Muirlands staff with your children. We had a great first day. I visited all our classrooms today and was very impressed with the enthusiasm and participation of our students. The Muirlands teachers prepared their classrooms and curriculum to ensure a positive learning environment as we welcome your students back on campus. I hope you have time tonight to talk with your student about their first day at school.
A few informational items as we prepare for day two:
- Our campus and gates will open at 8:15 am for the remainder of the school year.
- Your child received our first-day packet today. The packet contains three important forms that must be returned to your child's period one teacher. Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
- Please remember to have your child bring a fully charged SDUSD netbook to school each day.
- As we adjust to the new school year, please remember that lunch lines may be longer than usual. We appreciate your patience as our students learn 'The Process.' Packing a sack lunch is a great alternative. This year, we will again offer a salad bar option. Please remind your child of this healthy option.
- Our students will review the Muirlands handbook this week. The handbook is available on the Muirlands website 24-25 Muirlands Handbook. Please take some time to review the handbook with your student. Your child's period one teacher has a survey in Google Classroom that you will complete once you have reviewed the student handbook with your child.
- Please pay special attention to reviewing the dress code policy with your students. Muirlands Middle School strives to help students grow as learners and citizens. The Muirlands Dress Code encourages students to focus on learning, maintain school and age-appropriate attire, and be safe as they express their individuality appropriately. This dress code applies equally to all students. Attire should protect the health and safety of all students.
Dress Code:
- Student attire should not advertise or advocate the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, or gang affiliation. This also applies to garments with writing or pictures that are obscene, suggestive, sexual, mean-spirited, or violent.
- Half-shirts, crop tops, and sleeveless tops with large armholes are not to be worn.
- Shirts/Tops must be long enough to touch pants or shorts/skirts.
- Clothing must cover undergarments and buttocks.
- Pants must not have holes/rips above the 3-inch inseam.
- Wearing hoods and hats covering the ears or face area are prohibited on campus.
The following are not allowed at school:
- Pants or shorts worn below the hips.
- See-through clothing that exposes undergarments.
- Flip Flop, slides, Crocs, or slippers of any kind.
- Pajamas and blankets.
- Chewing gum and sunflower seeds.
When a student's attire does not meet the dress code, he/she/they will be asked to remedy the issue in one of the following ways:
The student will be asked to:
- Change into appropriate alternative clothing from their PE locker
- Change into clothes provided by the office
- Call home from the office to request a change of clothes
Muirlands staff will address non-compliance with the dress code respectfully and professionally. Students who repeatedly make clothing choices that do not adhere to the dress code will face consequences for defiance.
The weather is a bit warm. Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle and utilize our filling stations available throughout campus.
Lastly, I thank our parents for cooperating with drop-off and dismissal this morning. Please feel free to share your constructive feedback regarding our opening.
Sincerely,
Jeff Luna, Principal
