Muirlands Service Learning Program
At Muirlands Middle School, we believe learning extends beyond the classroom. Through service learning, students have the opportunity to use their time, talents, and interests to make a positive difference in their community.
The Muirlands Service Learning Program encourages students to become active, compassionate, and responsible community members. By volunteering with local nonprofit organizations, community groups, schools, and other service partners, students can learn more about the needs of their community while developing important skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, responsibility, and leadership.
Service learning is more than completing volunteer hours. Students are encouraged to follow a Think–Act–Reflect process:
Think: Learn about a community need and consider why it matters.
Act: Participate in meaningful service that helps address that need.
Reflect: Consider what was learned, how the service affected others, and how the experience may inspire future action.
The resources listed on this webpage are intended to help students and families identify local organizations that may offer volunteer opportunities for middle school-aged students. It is also fine if your student volunteered at an organization not listed in this suggested list as well. Opportunities, schedules, age requirements, supervision, and registration procedures vary by organization. Families are responsible for contacting each organization directly, confirming that an opportunity is appropriate for their child, and arranging any necessary permission, transportation, or supervision.
We encourage every Muirlands student to find a cause that is personally meaningful and discover how even small acts of service can have a lasting impact.
Step 1: Review the suggested organizations to volunteer at and reach out to them to schedule a time to volunteer.
Returning Volunteers
Complete Questions 1–6 only the first time you submit service hours for an organization.
When submitting additional hours from the same organization, you may skip Questions 1–6. Go directly to:
- Question 7: Enter your name and upload your completed service-hours log.
- Question 8: Enter the total number of hours included in this submission.
Complete Questions 1–6 again only when submitting hours from a different organization.
At the end of this school year, we will recognize students who volunteered their time with awards.
